What is this?
This is the second in a series of three activities. All of these activities are set in the context of a Goggle box show chosen 'Let's Bake'. These activities have been designed to requite children practice in drawing two-dimensional (2d) shapes and make representations of 3D objects using a range of methods and resource.
This learning activity is intended to back up teachers to plan learning experiences for children in their usual setting or while they are learning at dwelling house. This activity can be used in class or adjusted for learners who may be working remotely.
Learning activity
- Mario is taking part in a televised blistering competition chosen 'Let'south Bake'. He has to design and bake a cake that meets all of the criteria shown below.
- Before yous get-go the activity, read the criteria and cheque that yous empathise the meaning of all of the words in bold.
- Look at Mario'due south design for the block. Does it include all of the required features? Explicate your respond.
- Create a different design for the block that incorporates all of the required features.
Description of Required Features
Size
four layers
Shape
two layers must be cylindrical.
2 layers must exist cuboid shaped.
Height
Each layer must be 50% shorter in acme than the previous layer. Total height must not exceed sixty cm.
Extension activity
- Create a set of criteria for a cake design and and then construct a model of the block. You could use empty cardboard packaging or other household items to build your model.
- Create the criteria for some other cake pattern. Ask someone else to produce a drawing or a model of the cake, based on the description that you accept provided.

Numeracy and Mathematics
- Describes 3D objects and 2d shapes using specific vocabulary including regular, irregular, diagonal, radius, diameter and circumference. Applies this knowledge to demonstrate understanding of the relationship between 3D objects and their nets.
- Uses digital technologies and mathematical instruments to draw 2d shapes and make representations of 3D objects, understanding that not all parts of the 3D object can be seen.

- Estimates and then measures accurately using appropriate units and tools.

Possible approach to assessing learning
- Encourage the children to evaluate each other's designs. Are they able to identify if fundamental features have been included? This will give you evidence of their ability to assess a blueprint using a set criteria.
- When completing the extension activity, are the children able to include relevant information and evaluate designs based on the criteria provided? This volition help you to assess the depth of their understanding and their ability to transfer and utilise their knowledge.
- Ask the children to explain how they reached their last design. Tin can they show their initial sketches and explain how they adapted these to see the criteria? This will help y'all to assess if they can evaluate solutions and explain why they are or are not suitable
- Encourage the children to observe and talk over their drawings. Use questioning to assess whether they empathise that 2d sketches of 3D objects are representations and may not always be drawn to scale i.eastward. you may exist able to measure the front face of a cuboid using a ruler but the sides may not exist drawn to scale.
